Shift2SDV

a common Software development framework and hardware independent microservice-oriented middleware architecture for the stepwise migration to the Software Defined Vehicle of the Future
    HORIZON.2.4.2 – Key Digital Technologies
    Grant agreement ID: 101194245

The Shift2SDV project seeks to transform the European automotive industry by establishing a Software Defined Vehicle (SDV) ecosystem built around a common middleware and API framework that fosters collaboration across the entire automotive value chain. The project promotes a transition from traditional monolithic vehicle software architectures to a more flexible and modular approach, enabling greater innovation, scalability, and development efficiency through advanced middleware services and software engineering solutions.

At the heart of Shift2SDV is the creation of a state-of-the-art middleware platform based on microservices, providing a common foundation for the development of automotive applications. By abstracting the underlying hardware, the framework supports gradual migration from legacy systems, integrates both open-source and proprietary technologies, and accommodates safety-critical in-vehicle functions as well as cloud-based services. The platform is designed to simplify software development and integration while ensuring interoperability, flexibility, and compatibility with current and future automotive technologies. Key technical objectives include:

    • Build a European Software Defined Vehicle (SDV) ecosystem centered on a common middleware and API framework that enables collaboration across the entire automotive value chain.
    • Replace monolithic vehicle software architectures with a modular, microservices-based approach, improving flexibility, scalability, innovation, and faster software development.
    • Develop a hardware-agnostic middleware framework that simplifies application development by abstracting underlying vehicle hardware and supporting both in-vehicle and cloud-based functionality.
    • Enable seamless integration and migration by supporting existing and emerging technologies, open-source and proprietary components, and stepwise transition toward SDV architectures.
    • Ensure safety, security, and compliance through a robust system architecture aligned with automotive functional safety requirements.
    • Improve resource management and connectivity through orchestration capabilities and the integration of edge and cloud computing technologies.
    • Validate the framework through real-world use cases, demonstrating the practical benefits and feasibility of the developed SDV platform.
    • Strengthen European competitiveness and leadership in SDVs by promoting collaboration, dissemination, and exploitation of project results, ultimately driving innovation and economic growth in the automotive sector.

In the context of the Shift2SDV project, ResilTech provides its expertise in safety and security critical systems, supporting partners with particular focus on:

    • Defines methodologies for safety and cybersecurity analysis of SDV applications in compliance with ISO 26262, ISO/SAE 21434, and ISO/PAS 8800 for ML-based components.
    • Supports the development of mechanisms to detect anomalies and intrusions.
    • Contributes to the definition of a trusted modeling and development toolchain for SDV applications.
    • Supporting methodologies for verification and validation activities V&V of critical SDV applications by means of digital twins to (V&V) activities.
