    HAL4SDV was selected under the KDT JU 2023 call and receives funding from the Chips Joint Undertaking (Chips JU) and National Authorities under Grant Agreement No. 101139789.

    The HAL4SDV (Hardware Abstraction Layer for Software-Defined Vehicles) project aims to accelerate the transition toward next-generation Software-Defined Vehicles (SDVs), strengthening Europe’s technological leadership in the automotive sector. The initiative brings together industrial and research partners to develop a common software ecosystem capable of supporting future vehicle platforms independently of the underlying hardware architecture.

    The increasing complexity of modern vehicles, driven by centralized computing platforms, artificial intelligence, advanced connectivity, and over-the-air software updates, requires a new software development paradigm. Future vehicles will increasingly rely on hardware-independent software components, enabling applications to be developed and deployed across different electronic platforms while preserving functional safety, cybersecurity, and real-time performance.

    HAL4SDV addresses these challenges by defining common software interfaces, development methodologies, engineering tools, and reference architectures that enable hardware abstraction for both safety-critical and non-safety-critical applications. The project also promotes the harmonization of European and international R&D initiatives, contributing to a unified Software-Defined Vehicle ecosystem.

    By leveraging advances in microelectronics, communication technologies, software engineering, and artificial intelligence, HAL4SDV develops innovative methods and technologies for vehicle platforms beyond 2030, addressing the four key pillars of future automotive systems: Systems, Safety, Security, and Software.
